Latgale – one of the five regions of Latvia – is located farthest away from the capital Riga, in the eastern part of the country. We want to show you this region’s beautiful nature, lakes, hills, country roads and the kind people living here and creating wonderful things with their own hands! And – we can safely say – you will get the real feeling of Latgale only if you travel around this fantastic, authentic region by the off-road cars from “Riga 4×4”. So – anyone who wants can join and enjoy this trip!

During the three-day, 700-kilometer journey, you will meet many nice people, various craftsmen, will get to know the culinary heritage and traditions of Latgale, hear the Latgalian language (!), climb watchtowers and church towers, enjoy the constant beauty of the landscape and the proximity of nature, diving into the small meadows and forests of Latgale. A 4×4 car will be very useful here! In addition, we will also show you truly unique places that other tour companies do not have on their programmes!

The most important stops of the 4×4 tour “Land of Blue Lakes – Nature and People”:

• “Handmade Latgola” – the home of Latgale’s contemporary craft values
• Razna National Park and Nature Park “Daugavas Loki”
• Great Liepukalns and the highest observation tower in Latvia (34 meters high)
• Lake Razna and the fantastic landscapes of Makonkalns
• Bread museum, soap workshop, potter’s workshop
• Abandoned watermill and an uninhabited church in the middle of the forest
• Specially selected rural roads with really beautiful views and the real feeling of Latgale, difficult roads for 4×4 cars and river crossings.

How is the three-day trip to Latgale organized?

The main points about the tour in the Land of Blue Lakes with 4×4 cars:

• The duration of the trip is three days and two nights. Accommodation is in guest houses, with breakfast included.
• Lunch is both in local cafes and as a picnic in nature. For dinner, travelers have the opportunity to cook themselves in the guest houses (fully equipped kitchen, dishes, grills, accessories, etc. are available) or in local cafes and restaurants. The total cost includes 2 lunches, dinner is not included.
• The trip takes place with five-seater 4×4 off-road cars, each car has a driver and the car is meant for 4 travelers
• The trip is led by a 4×4 Center guide, as well as possible local guides
• Each car has a walkie-talkie in order to hear what the guide is telling, to make it possible to talk between cars during the journey, as well as to announce the need to stop, etc.
• Small physical activities are also included in the trip, for example, hiking for 20 minutes in one direction, climbing a little hill or an observation tower, it is also possible to go out by boat on the lake in the evening, etc.
• During the trip, we will stop at various attractions, lakes, watch towers, nature trails, we will swim in forest lakes and wade into a meadow, if there is a desire and suitable weather conditions.
• Group size: 12 to 24 people.

Latgale 3 days travel plan:

Day 1. Riga – Livani – Preili – Kategrade – Aglona (~270 km). 8.00AM departure from Riga (place to be specified). Around 10.30AM in Livani, we start the investigation of Latgale at “Handmade Latgola”. An old water mill, an old wooden church in the middle of the forest with an even older railway track instead of the bell, a deer park, country roads and landscapes. Lunch at the terrace cafe in Preili. Bread museum and dinner with traditional Latgalian cuisine. We end our day around 19.30PM arrivinng at the guest house near Aglona. Visiting the Aglona Basilica, swimming, going out by boat and having dinner by the fire – as desired.

Day 2. Aglona – Andrupene – Lipuski – Andzeli – Auleja – Aglona (~150 km). Breakfast in the guest house at 9.00AM, and the departure at 10.00AM. Probably the most beautiful landscapes and the most interesting roads, suitable for 4×4 cars. Razna National Park. The outstanding landscapes of Makonkalns and the Great Liepukalns. Observation towers. Soap workshop and master class or getting to know Latgale ceramics with ancient methods of dish making. Picnic in nature at lunchtime. Historical buildings and stories. Dinner in a cafe in Aglona. Return to the guest house around 19.30PM. Sauna.

Day 3. Aglona – Skeltova – Izvalta – Daugavpils – Nereta – Riga (~290km). Breakfast in the guest house at 9.00AM, and the departure at 10.00AM. Another very interesting and diverse day. 4×4 country roads and forest trails. Nature Park “Daugavas Loki”. Observation towers. Slutiski village and bluff. Lunch in Daugavpils. The ancient, unique technologies of Lead Shot factory. “Rally” through the Latgale desert. Return to Riga via Selija – another cultural region of Latvia. Arrival back in Riga around 20.00PM. A gift for each participant from “4×4 Centrs” and “Handmade Latgola”.

Travel costs and application

The cost of the trip is 540 EUR per person.

The price includes almost everything that is included in the travel programme:

• 2 nights in comfortable rooms in a guest house (WC and shower in the room)
• 2 x breakfast, 1 x lunch and 1 x picnic
• All tours and entrance tickets
• 4×4 SUV car with a driver, walkie-talkies in all cars

Not included

Dinner in Aglona and lunch in Daugavpils – everyone can choose their own menu.

The excursion is also possible with 9-seater or 20-seater minibuses, the cost per person is approximately 390 EUR – please ask us for more exact price! Of course, the bus will not drive on forest roads, hills and shallow water paths!
